  • A novel system for Automatic Incident Detection (AID) in highway traffic is proposed which uses two new traffic parameters, the average distance traveled by vehicles and the average change in vehicle speed when changing lanes. The variations of these parameters in time are collected by RSUs placed at uniform distances on the side of the highway, through a wireless Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication system, which uses a beaconing mechanism to establish the wireless V2I link based on the IEEE 802.11 standard.
