Network Forensics: A Comprehensive Review of Tools and Techniques

Research Area:  Digital Forensics

Abstract:

With the evolution and popularity of computernetworks, a tremendous amount of devices are increasingly beingadded to the global internet connectivity. Additionally, moresophisticated tools, methodologies, and techniques are being usedto enhance global internet connectivity. It is also worth men-tioning that individuals, enterprises, and corporate organizationsare quickly appreciating the need for computer networking. However, the popularity of computer and mobile networkingbrings various drawbacks mostly associated with security anddata breaches. Each day, cyber-related criminals explore anddevise complicated means of infiltrating and exploiting individualand corporate networks security. This means cyber or networkforensic investigators must be equipped with the necessary mech-anisms of identifying the nature of security vulnerabilities andthe ability to identify and apprehend the respective cyber-relatedoffenders correctly. Therefore, this researchs primary focus isto provide a comprehensive analysis of the concept of networkforensic investigation and describing the methodologies and toolsemployed in network forensic investigations by emphasizing onthe study and analysis of the OSCAR methodology. Finally, thisresearch provides an evaluative analysis of the relevant literaturereview in a network forensics investigation.
