Research Area:  Internet of Things
Internet of things provide the platform to human and machine to learn and communicate using huge numbers of smart sensors, embedded devices, services, and other Internet-connected devices. Currently, IoT applications are used in wide range of sectors like healthcare, industrial, smart cities, etc. This application having different characteristics like real-time, diverse applications, and everything as a service. Middleware is key part or layer of IoT architecture. Middleware is software component that provides communication between devices and application. It provides the interface between heterogeneous devices and IoT application. Actually, Middleware supports many features like heterogeneity, reliability, availability, mobility, scalability, intelligence, privacy, and security. Recently, many proposals for IoT middleware are proposed based on their design types and architecture. The review presented in this paper contains in depth comparison between different service-oriented middleware. In addition of summary, we also explore research challenges, open issues, and research directions in era of service-oriented middleware.
