Research Area:  Internet of Things
The scale of growth of transportation in recent years and the dependency affiliated to it by the industrial and domestic spheres have brought to front the problems of traffic congestion, transport overload, and as well as concern of safety of and resource availability to the passengers. Integration of IoT to the transportation systems has brought instrumental solution to such problems, at the same time providing peripheral commute information, paving way for a smarter, and more informed travel, giving birth to intelligent transport systems (ITS). The challenge now posed is to reduce the extensive power ask of IoT-based technologies that shall be implemented in such schemes. In this chapter, we explore the need, scope, architecture, key technologies involved, and respective power optimization prospects for ITS, providing energy efficiency solutions that can be implemented for each technical layer of ITS.
