Research Area:  Blockchain Technology
Blockchain technology (BC) is a new technology that can potentially bring value to governments by providing public services in a more direct and distributed manner. The vast majority of nontechnical literature related to blockchain technology, especially in public sector, focuses on the landscaping of use cases. The major drawback of the landscaping approach is that it is speculative and often done without a reference to empirical evidence. Our research aims to go beyond the state-of-the-art and provide insights into the economic constraints and effects of blockchain implementations in public sector based on empirical evidence. Our poster presents the identified true drivers of cost and benefits and explores potential policy steps that the European Union could explore to capture the full benefits of blockchain technology for the public sector.
